26 August 2021 Wednesday, 15 September 2021 | Plastic packaging taxes: unpacking what compliance readiness looks like (4 pm BST) In January 2021, the EU Plastics Levy came into force with EU Member States required to pay 0.80 EUR for each kilogram of non-recycled plastic on their market. To finance the levy and incentivize more sustainable behaviors, countries such as Italy and Spain are introducing new plastic taxes. Similarly, the UK has also announced its own Plastic Packaging Tax. With Spain, Italy and the UK effective in the first half of 2022, and other EU countries planning new legislation, assessing the impact and preparing for compliance is key. Several practical issues are arising in the run-up to the effective date of plastic taxes, from the organizational, stakeholder, process and technology perspective. Many of these considerations are novel for tax departments and their internal and external stakeholders. In parallel, public funding acts as a catalyst for greater innovation, in terms of recycling and technology to support plastics tracking, reuse and recycling processes. Funding programs such as LIFE and Horizon Europe can support innovative sustainable packaging and recycling projects. With 2022 fast approaching, the second webcast of the series focuses on compliance readiness. Is your business ready and set up for compliance from Day One?
