Under this scenario, however, we’ve assumed that cost and performance improvements aren’t enough to persuade consumers to quickly abandon what they have in favor of new carbon-free alternatives. We’re confident the technology will be there when the time comes and that governments will continue their support for energy transition, but in fits and starts, and with pockets of resistance. Technology development won’t stand still though. In The Long Goodbye, digitization continues to reduce the cost of oil and gas exploration and production.
