15 May 2024 Finland implements automated decision-making for some citizenship applications, proposes to tighten requirements for citizenship Effective 2 May 2024, qualifying third-country nationals began receiving automated decisions on their citizenship applications if they meet certain criteria. The Finnish government also recently submitted a proposal to the parliament proposing stricter requirements to obtain citizenship. The issuance of automated decisions is expected to reduce the time and administrative requirements associated with obtaining Finnish citizenship for qualifying third-country nationals. If the proposal to tighten the citizenship requirements is approved, impacted individuals will be subject to heightened eligibility requirements when applying to obtain a Finnish citizenship.
