The dynamic geopolitical environment is reshaping global tax policies, creating both challenges and opportunities for companies.

On 1 December 2024, the new European Commission began its new five-year term with a focus on restoring competitiveness for the EU. In January, the Commission released its Competitiveness Compass, setting out the EU’s roadmap to a competitive industrial future, with three pillars: closing the innovation gap, a joint roadmap for decarbonization and competitiveness, and reducing dependencies and increasing security in a changing world.

More recently, on 26 February, the EU started its journey toward more competitiveness as the Commission presented its action plan for the Clean Industrial Deal and released the first Omnibus simplification package focusing on sustainability regulations. These communications and proposals are the first mapping out and executing the steps to be taken to enhance the EU's competitiveness. They will be followed by many others in the coming weeks and months. Tax will play an important role in actioning each of the pillars.

In the US, policy announcements are and will continue to have a significant impact for multinational companies and governments alike, including in the areas of global trade and tax policies.

What will the EU’s new competitiveness policies entail and how do these take the positioning by other economic blocs into account?  How could these ambitions adapt and supplement the existing tax framework? And what will be the impact of these tax changes on multinationals headquartered or operating in the EU?
